Zelda Phoenix was founded as Forest Sages by Rob Petrin on July 4, 2001. Forest Sages went through more than a dozen layout revisions in the first year and struggled to publish much content.

In February 2003, the website briefly closed and then reopened as Zelda Phoenix. For the next year and a half the website published numerous guides and built a Zelda encyclopedia before closing in August 2004.

The original URL of this website has not yet been discovered. The earliest archives are from December 2001 and are labeled as “Version 5”. Earlier versions may have gone by other names. The site history documentation mentions four other names, but some of them may have been message boards or other non-website fan clubs: Zelda Quest Status, Dampe’s Graveyard, Hylian Helpers Online, Zelda Quest Status Re-Vamped. No additional information has been discovered about these fan projects.
